Veterinary parasitology and One Health
A particular focus is on zoonotic parasites that can be transmitted via food, such as Toxoplasma gondii, Trichinella spp., Echinococcus multilocularis and Fasciola sp. The group investigates their prevalence in Switzerland, whilst also developing and refining methods for their detection in both animals and food. The results inform recommendations on the safe handling of food and public health guidelines.
Animal health is also a central focus, with research into abortion-causing pathogens in ruminants, pasture parasites in ruminants and horses, and parasitic infections in small animals. These studies focus on improving animal welfare through refined diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, the identification of risk factors, and the provision of expert advice to livestock owners. Recent studies are investigating sustainable control strategies designed to reduce environmental contamination by antiparasitic drugs and the development of resistance in parasites.
